Oversight of Bungartz walk behind tractors -- L5 series, built from 1954 till 1963 by Bungartz in München, Germany and from 1963 till 1967 by Bungartz&Peschke in Hornbach, Germany![]() This is some sort of prototype for the Bungartz L5, having a Fichtel&Sachs 10 hp two stroke diesel engine. The shape of the tinwork is very different from the production models. Date of manufacture probably 1953. ![]() Bungartz L5V with own Bungartz 450 four stroke paraffin engine, developing 12 hp on petrol and 11 hp on paraffin. ![]() Bungartz L5S with Stihl two stroke diesel engine. Developing 14 hp at 2000 rpm out of 760 cm3. Special features of this engine are the outlet valve and the choke. These are a bit hard to start, as the engine turns 5 times at every rotation of the crank handle. ![]() Bungartz L5D with 10 hp Fichtel&Sachs two stroke diesel engine. This is the water cooled version of the Sachs Diesel engine. ![]() Bungartz L5D with 12 hp Fichtel&Sachs two stroke diesel engine. This is the air cooled version of the Sachs Diesel engine, recognisable from the exhaust. ![]() Bungartz L5H with 13 hp aircooled Hatz E89FG four stroke diesel engine. These were available with a 10 hp Hatz engine as well. The 13 hp model could be fitted with complete electrical system, including starter motor and glowing plug. I use mine to cultivate the bigger gardens, and it works very good, as the machine does all the turning etc. itself, due to the very modern steering mechanism (with blocked differential, either wheel can be released during operation). The nicely restored L5H in the photo belongs to Klaus Kircher of Germany. On his website on rotary cultivators, Donald A. Jones mentions that the Bungartz L5 was also available with a Wisconsin AGN 12.5 hp petrol engine in the USA.
